Bloom

To lay down one’s life for one’s friend

Story starter finished by 3rd grader, Sean, with writing help from Tony McCaffrey.

Starter: Once there was a little flower. All his brothers and sisters were blooming into beautiful flowers. But not this little flower.

An ant walked by the flower and asked, “Why don’t you bloom little flower?”

“I am too shy,” said the flower.

A butterfly flew by and said, “Little flower, you could be so beautiful. Go out and show the world your beauty.”

“I am not beautiful,” the flower said.

A bee came buzzing by and said, “Little flower, the world needs your beauty and we bees need your pollen. Why won’t you bloom?”

“I don’t want to,” said the little flower.

The gardener saw that the little flower was not blooming, so went to buy a new flower to plant in its place.

“I’d better bloom,” said the little flower. It tried but it just couldn’t bloom.

The insects tried to help the little flower. But they had to hurry because the gardener was returning with the new flower.

The bee chased the gardener around to keep him busy. But the ant and butterfly couldn’t think of a plan.

The gardener gave up and went inside the house. The bee returned to the flower and had a plan. The bee stung the little flower in its behind and the little flower bloomed faster than you could snap your fingers together.

Everyone was happy but the bee. This bee can only sting once and then it dies.

God saw how nice the bee was. The bee gave his life for his friend—the little flower. God blessed the bee and the bee came back to life. From that day on, the bee was called the saint of the insects.
