The Three Little Rich Pigs

This parable was originally written to answer the question “What happened to the rich man’s brothers?” at the end of the parable of The Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31). However, many other threads got woven into this wonderful story.

A bit of Job 1:6-22, in which God gives the devil permission to test someone. A bit of the parable of The Wise and Foolish Builders (Matthew 7:24-27), in which someone builds their house on sand. These are combined with The Three Little Pigs to create a delightful parable.

For some reason, God allowed the devil to test these three rich pigs. God called 1-800-BAD-GUYS to give the devil permission.

The devil went to the first pig’s elaborate house, which was built upon a foundation of sand. Disguised as a beggar, the devil knocked on the door, “Excuse me sir, could you spare some scraps of food for a poor beggar?”

“No,” answered the first pig.

This made the devil mad and he yelled, “I will huff and puff and blow your house down.”

The house was built upon sand, so it easily collapsed. The devil grabbed the first pig and took him down to where the devil lived.

The devil returned and then went to the second pig’s fancy house. This house was built upon the foundation of quicksand. Disguised once again as a beggar, the devil knocked on the door, “Excuse me sir, could you spare some scraps of food for a poor beggar?”

“No,” answered the second pig.

Again, this made the devil mad and he yelled, “I will huff and puff and blow your house down.”

The house was built upon quicksand, so it fell over and, along with the second pig, slowly sank down to where the devil lived.

The devil then went to the third pig’s stunning house, which looked to be built upon a strong foundation. In the disguise of a beggar, the devil knocked and said, “Excuse me sir, could you spare some scraps of food for a poor beggar?”

“Just a minute,” said the third pig as he went back into his kitchen to get some food. He gave the disguised devil a lot of food. The devil took it and didn’t even say ‘thank you.’

The devil was greedy so after he ate all the food, he still said, “I will huff and puff and blow your house down.”

But no matter how much he huffed and puffed and huffed and puffed, the house did not move one inch. The devil finally gave up and went back home to be mean to the two other pigs.

Back home, the devil phoned God and reported the results, “I got the first and second pigs, but that third pig was kind and he had a strong house that was built on a strong foundation. I couldn’t blow it down.”

“I am that strong foundation,” God said, “and the one who builds on me will be safe.”

The third pig lived many wonderful years and when it was finally time, God came down to his strong house to escort him up to heaven.
